Rayan Cherki continues to impress at the Under-21 level, yet the Lyon playmaker is still waiting for his breakthrough with the French senior team.
While his performances for Les Bleuets have caught attention, national team coach Didier Deschamps has hinted that Cherki’s time could come—but only if he maintains his form and consistency.
Speaking ahead of France’s UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Croatia, Deschamps was asked about Cherki’s chances of breaking into the senior squad.
The manager acknowledged the youngster’s potential but made it clear that talent alone is not enough.
“That Rayan, like others, has the potential to join the French senior team: Yes, of course. There are plenty of people, it’s up to him to confirm that,” Deschamps stated.
Young talent under close watch
Deschamps also emphasized that he closely monitors emerging French talents, including those in the U21 setup.
“There are other young players with potential. I saw them with the Under-21s against England,” he said, acknowledging the depth of promising players in the system.
Despite Cherki’s standout display against England—where he registered a goal and two assists—Deschamps has so far opted for different profiles in his recent selections.
Rennes midfielder Désiré Doué, for example, was preferred over Cherki in recent international call-ups, a decision that has sparked debate among fans and analysts.
Previously, Deschamps had discussed Cherki alongside Magnès Akliouche, another rising star, noting their strong performances at club level.
However, he suggested that their primary focus remains the U21 European Championship rather than immediate inclusion in the senior squad.
“They are also two very good players who are doing great things in their clubs, with not identical profiles.
But they are supposed to be concerned by the Euro Espoirs, which does not mean that they could not come to the A,” Deschamps explained.
Injury halts Cherki’s momentum
Just as Cherki was building momentum, a foot injury forced him to withdraw from France U21’s match against Slovakia.
The setback has temporarily slowed his progress at a time when he was pushing for senior team recognition.
While the Lyon midfielder remains an exciting prospect for France, speculation continues over whether he will eventually switch allegiance to Algeria, the country of his heritage.
For now, the decision lies with both Cherki and Deschamps, as the young playmaker awaits his opportunity to step onto the senior international stage.
