The sports media was abuzz this Tuesday with the revelation that Zinedine Zidane, the current assistant coach of Real Madrid, came close to becoming the coach of the France national team in 2012. However, this prospect did not materialize due to concerns over Zidane’s lack of coaching experience, which worked against him with the French Football Federation.
In an interview on RMC the following Wednesday morning, Didier Deschamps, the current coach of the French national team, acknowledged being aware of the situation. He expressed his belief that Zidane is on track to becoming a significant figure in coaching.
“Yes, I was already aware of that. Zizou made a crucial decision: ‘I’m going to become a coach.’ He obtained his coaching qualifications (…). Zizou, I don’t see him coaching a small club. Even for me, relatively speaking. Zizou is in a league of his own. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable coaching at a lower level,” commented Deschamps.
Deschamps also addressed the speculation about Zidane potentially moving to Monaco, currently led by Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant.
“He needs to be in charge of a team where he can excel because his results will be expected immediately. He will start next year, but he doesn’t know where,” suggested the France coach.
