Diafra Sakho: West Ham’s Rising Star Eyes Drogba’s Legacy
Could Didier Drogba finally have a true successor in the Premier League? If early signs are anything to go by, Diafra Sakho is making a strong case. The Senegalese striker, who arrived at West Ham from Ligue 2 side FC Metz during the summer, has hit the ground running — scoring four goals in his first four appearances for the Hammers.
For Sakho, the motivation is clear: Didier Drogba.
“I want to be the new Drogba of the Premier League. He’s a player I respect and love a lot. In fact, it was this love for him that made me choose West Ham’s number 15,” Sakho told the English media.
Walking in Drogba’s Footsteps
Despite never featuring in Ligue 1, Sakho made a direct leap to English football — a bold move that is already paying off. His physical presence, aerial ability, and finishing instincts have drawn comparisons to the Chelsea legend, and Sakho isn’t shy about the influence Drogba has had on his career.
“I like his way of playing, but also his style. I think the English league needs players like Drogba. That’s why I draw a lot of inspiration from him.”
A Bright Future?
Though it’s still early days, Sakho’s form has already caught the attention of fans and pundits alike. Some remain skeptical that any African striker can match Drogba’s towering legacy in the Premier League, but Sakho is clearly determined to carve his own path — and perhaps follow Drogba to one of England’s elite clubs.
For now, consistency will be key. But if Sakho keeps firing, West Ham may have unearthed a gem — and Africa might just have found its next Premier League star.
