Deschamps defends playing Kylian Mbappe as center forward
Days before the 2026 World Cup begins, France coach Didier Deschamps delivered an extensive interview to The Guardian, discussing France’s ambitions, Michael Olise’s emergence, ongoing criticism, and the pivotal Kylian Mbappe situation.
Deschamps fully embraces France’s favorite status: “We are among the favorites. That is not a taboo word for me. If we hold this status today, which seems logical and well-deserved to me, it is thanks to everything we have accomplished and the results we have achieved”.
He praised Michael Olise’s outstanding season: “Although rather reserved off the pitch, Olise creates magic every time he steps onto it. He is in peak form and has every potential to become one of the standout players of this World Cup”.
Addressing persistent criticism, Deschamps noted international recognition differs: “There may be more recognition abroad. I travel a lot, and I know very well that the perception outside France is different. If I am still here today, it is because the French team has won a lot of matches”.
On captain Mbappé’s leadership style: “Kylian, who is our captain today, used to listen and observe before taking on the role. He doesn’t do things the way Hugo (Lloris) did; he brings a completely different style of leadership. He always prioritizes the collective interest over his own”.
When questioned about Mbappé’s center-forward position, Deschamps responded ironically: “I must be really stupid, and a lot of the coaches who managed him at club level must be too. Over the last three years, from his final season at PSG to his last two years at Real Madrid, Kylian has always played as a central striker. He’s been playing in that position for three years”.
