Denzel Dumfries ready to shoulder Real Madrid responsibility after official unveiling

Denzel Dumfries says he is “living a dream” after being officially presented as a Real Madrid player, 47 days after the club announced that his transfer had been completed.

The 30-year-old Netherlands international took part in an official presentation ceremony alongside Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, formally beginning his career at the Spanish club.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Dumfries attended the event with the club’s honorary president, Pirri, and members of his family. He watched a video featuring the highlights of his career, received gifts from Perez and then signed his contract.

The agreement ties the player, who arrived from Rotterdam, to Real Madrid until 2030.

“Playing for Real Madrid is a dream for anyone,” Dumfries said through the club’s media channels. “Being here represents a great responsibility, of course, because we have important objectives. I am extremely proud and happy. I am ready to start.”

Dumfries joined Real Madrid training on 28 July and made his first appearance for the club in their opening pre-season friendly against Fiorentina, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

His arrival strengthens the squad following Dani Carvajal’s departure, with Real Madrid signing a player whose experience and standing make him capable of taking responsibility on the right side of the team.

Dumfries will compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back position. Real Madrid now have two established options in the role, and Mourinho has tested both players together on two occasions.

The Dutchman spent five seasons with Inter Milan, making 207 appearances, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists.

His most memorable contribution in Italy came in the 2024-25 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. Dumfries scored twice and created three goals in that tie.

During his time at Inter Milan, he developed into one of the world’s leading players in his position. He now arrives at the Santiago Bernabeu with the significant task of filling the void left by a club legend such as Carvajal.

Dumfries will, however, work under a manager who appears to be particularly well suited to his style of play. His ability to contribute both defensively and in attack is expected to form part of the challenge ahead as he adapts to life at Real Madrid.

Following his formal unveiling, Dumfries is preparing to make his first competitive appearance for the club on Saturday. Real Madrid will travel to face Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium, where the defender could begin his bid to establish himself in the team’s starting line-up.

The match will also provide the first opportunity for supporters to see the club’s new right-back in a competitive fixture, after his debut came during the pre-season draw with Fiorentina.
