Manchester United youth forward Chido Obi has been backed to secure more senior opportunities by former Red Devils defender and Premier League winner Phil Jones.

The 17-year-old, who has Nigerian roots but represents Denmark at youth level, enjoyed his breakthrough last season but has not been seen in Erik ten Hag’s matchday squads this term.

Despite the absence, Jones believes the highly rated teenager remains on the right path and only needs to focus on maturity and professionalism.

“When he was playing 18s football, it was men against boys. He was bullying people, it was so easy for him,” Jones told Metro, speaking courtesy of FreeBets.com.

Jones, who lifted the Premier League title with United in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson, explained that Obi must strike a balance between ambition and patience as he navigates his early career.

“I think he needs to understand where he is at in his head and figure out what his realistic expectations are. Is he going to play every game? No. Is he going to be on the bench every game? No,” Jones said.

The former England international added that Obi’s talent will shine through if he stays ready for the opportunities that inevitably come his way.

“But what he needs to do is make sure that when he is called upon, and there will be times he is called upon and he will get chances, that he is ready and happy. He has to be professional and be ready because if he is they will have one hell of a player.”
