Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s Freiburg chapter ends after injury-hit four-year spell

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s time at SC Freiburg has officially come to an end, closing a four-year stay that began with high expectations but was ultimately defined by injury setbacks rather than sustained first-team continuity.

The Ghana international arrived in the summer of 2022 from FC St. Pauli for a reported €5 million fee and initially settled quickly into Christian Streich’s system, offering creativity and attacking flexibility in his debut campaign.

ACL injury that changed everything

His momentum was halted in February 2023 when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during training.

What was initially viewed as a standard rehabilitation period developed into a prolonged absence, with complications extending his time on the sidelines to nearly three years, ruling him out of more than 120 competitive matches.

Long road through rehabilitation

The long recovery process placed significant psychological strain on the 30-year-old midfielder, who has since admitted that there were moments when retirement felt like a genuine possibility.

Despite those challenges, he continued his rehabilitation with determination, gradually working his way back toward competitive action under Freiburg’s medical and technical setup.

Return via Freiburg U23 side

Kyereh eventually returned to match action through Freiburg’s U23 squad during the latter stages of the 2025/26 season.

He made eight appearances for the reserve team, registering two goals and two assists, offering encouraging signs of his technical sharpness and attacking instinct after a lengthy layoff.

Fresh start after emotional farewell

His departure was confirmed following an emotional farewell ceremony at the Europa-Park Stadion on May 22, 2026, where the club acknowledged his difficult journey and perseverance.

Now set to become a free agent on July 1, Kyereh is targeting a new opportunity that guarantees regular playing time as he looks to rebuild his career.

He also remains focused on international ambitions, with the midfielder determined to force his way back into the Ghana setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, viewing the coming months as decisive for his future at the highest level.
