Da Cruz backs Mtasingwa to make greater impact for Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz says Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko will play a bigger role after the FIFA international break, despite the defensive midfielder struggling to secure regular game time since joining the club.

The 27-year-old moved to Chiefs from Tanzanian club Azam FC in late July, arriving only days before the start of the new league campaign. Since then, he has made three appearances across all competitions for the Glamour Boys.

Da Cruz believes the midfielder’s limited involvement is primarily the result of his late arrival and the time required to adjust to life in South Africa and the coach’s tactical approach.

“It is related to his adaptation in South Africa because he arrived a little bit late during our pre-season, so he needed time to adapt in our model game,” Da Cruz told the media.

The French coach stressed that Mtasingwa remains part of his plans and said the player should have more chances when Chiefs face a crowded fixture schedule following the break.

“But I trust him a lot. After the FIFA break, we will play a lot of games, so we will need everyone and Adolf will get minutes in this period,” Da Cruz added.

Mtasingwa joined Chiefs after establishing himself as an important player for Azam, while his performances also led to international recognition with Tanzania.

His late arrival at Naturena left him with less time than some of his team-mates to learn Da Cruz’s methods. Competition for places in midfield has also limited his opportunities since the start of the season.

The international break could give Mtasingwa additional time to improve his understanding of Chiefs’ system before the club enters a demanding run of matches.

Chiefs will host Golden Arrows next Sunday in their final fixture before the first FIFA international break of the season.

Mtasingwa’s immediate challenge will be to earn more minutes and use them to show that he can become a regular option for Da Cruz as the campaign progresses.

With Chiefs set to face a busier schedule after the international window, Da Cruz expects the Tanzania midfielder to have further opportunities to establish himself in the team.
