Kaizer Chiefs set to sign free agent Elias Mokwana after long wait

Elias Mokwana is expected to join Kaizer Chiefs as a free agent after ending his association with Esperance Tunis following the completion of his loan spell at Saudi Arabian club Al Hazem.

The 27-year-old winger has been linked with a move to Chiefs for several years, particularly during his time at Sekhukhune United. After spells in Tunisia and the Gulf region, Mokwana now appears close to finally becoming a Glamour Boy.

The proposed move to Naturena could suit both player and club. Mokwana has been seeking to re-establish his career, while Chiefs need additions capable of making an impact in important matches.

Mokwana was previously regarded as one of the most highly rated players in South African football and progressed to the Bafana Bafana squad. He was included in the 2025 Afcon group selected by former coach Hugo Broos.

With Pitso Mosimane now in charge of Bafana Bafana, Mokwana will be looking to regain his place in the national-team set-up. A successful period at Chiefs could provide him with the platform to do so.

Chiefs’ need for a player of Mokwana’s profile was highlighted by their failure to convert the opportunities they created in the Soweto Derby. The club appears to lack a player with the temperament to influence high-pressure fixtures, and Mokwana is expected to help address that weakness.

Supporters have reacted positively to the prospect of his return to Chiefs on social media. However, the move will still need to work for both sides, particularly after previous examples of the club re-signing players it had targeted in the past without those relationships proving successful.

The expectation will be for Mokwana to make an immediate contribution. His ability to rediscover his best form and cope with the demands of wearing Chiefs’ gold-and-black shirt will determine whether this long-delayed move can develop into the revival Naturena is seeking.
