Portugal’s Ronaldo Faces World Cup Fitness Uncertainty as President Shows Support
Portugal’s preparations for the World Cup have been overshadowed by concerns over Cristiano Ronaldo’s ongoing knee injury, raising doubts about whether the Real Madrid star will be fit to take part in Brazil. Despite hopes that their talisman can lead them to glory, the Portuguese camp is cautiously preparing for the possibility that he may not play.
Portugal’s coach spoke candidly about Ronaldo’s status:
“I’m preparing for the World Cup both with Cristiano and without him. I must consider all factors and cannot risk fielding a player who is not fully fit. We will monitor his condition day by day without taking unnecessary risks. There is no set date for his return, and per FIFA rules, we have until June 15 to make changes to the squad if needed.”
Nevertheless, Ronaldo’s spirits appear undampened. The Portuguese star recently shared a selfie with President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who visited the squad to offer encouragement. Ronaldo looked upbeat and engaged, suggesting he remains mentally prepared and connected with the team.
The Real Madrid forward’s positive demeanour has sparked hope among fans and officials alike, contrasting with the uncertainty surrounding his physical readiness.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, the French national team received a morale boost from their own presidential visit. French President François Hollande addressed Les Bleus with words of encouragement ahead of their World Cup campaign.
“I want to send a message of support to the Blues and remind them of the honour it is to represent France at this World Cup. The French should be proud and rally behind this team.”
Acknowledging that France are not the tournament favourites, Hollande added:
“So what? Nothing is impossible for Les Bleus. They can succeed. No challenge should be foreign to us.”
Both presidential visits underscore the national importance of the World Cup and the hopes resting on their respective squads. While Portugal anxiously awaits updates on Ronaldo’s condition, France embraces the underdog spirit, ready to defy expectations.
With the tournament fast approaching, the fitness of key players like Ronaldo and Franck Ribéry — who is also battling injury concerns for France — will be crucial in shaping their teams’ prospects on football’s biggest stage.
