Rennes midfielder Jean II Makoun expressed his hopes for a Breton derby in the Coupe de France final, should his team advance. As En Avant Guingamp faces AS Monaco in the semi-finals at their fervent Roudourou stadium, Rennes anticipates a potential showdown in the final. Sitting on the brink of the relegation zone in the league, Rennes aims to rejuvenate with a third Coupe de France final appearance.
Makoun, the Cameroonian international, desires a 100% Breton clash in the final, echoing a sentiment for regional pride and perhaps a chance for redemption following Rennes’ 2009 final loss: “We want Guingamp for a possible revenge,” he acknowledges. “People also say that it would be good for the region to have two Breton clubs in the final. But the important thing is to win it,” confides the Indomitable Lion on RMC, expressing contentment with their recent victory against Angers (2-1).
Reflecting on Rennes’ season, Makoun admits to past struggles but acknowledges recent improvements: “Right now, we’re not too bad. We have been able to raise the bar in recent matches. We had a certain fear because we weren’t very good in the game, we were conceding a lot of goals. This season, we had difficulty stringing together two victories in a row. We were worried. Everyone saw us going down because we weren’t efficient.”
