Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon will meet at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe on 3 October in a fixture that has little of the feel of a routine international friendly.
The match will bring the international break to a close for the Indomitable Lions, with the two sides arriving in contrasting moods and both looking to make a statement.
Cote d’Ivoire go into the game with confidence after recording two successive home victories. Under Herve Renard, the 2023 African champions will be backed by a home crowd and will be seeking another strong performance.
Cameroon, meanwhile, are looking to respond after a disappointing display against Congo in Brazzaville. David Pagou’s side will not, however, approach the trip as underdogs without ambition. The Indomitable Lions believe they can return with a positive result.
The teams were also level when they last met at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, drawing 1-1. Cameroon had not been expected to perform at that level in that encounter, but the result will provide encouragement ahead of the latest meeting.
Cameroon considering changes
David Pagou is expected to make significant changes to the Cameroon line-up after the previous two matches, while retaining his usual 3-5-2 formation.
Simon Ngapandouetnbu is expected to replace Blondy Noukeu in goal.
Che Malone is set to return in central defence alongside experienced player Samuel Kotto and Darlin Yongwa. Jackson Tchatchoua and Mahamadou Nagida are expected to operate as the wing-backs.
David Nyengue could join established players Arthur Avom and Danny Namaso in midfield.
In attack, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to partner Christian Kofane, who is set to return from injury.
The anticipated Cameroon XI is: Simon Ngapandouetnbu; Che Malone, Samuel Kotto, Darlin Yongwa; Mahamadou Nagida, Jackson Tchatchoua; David Roy Nyengue, Arthur Avom, Danny Namaso; Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Kofane.
More than a preparation match
The fixture represents a significant test for both nations before their next major commitments. For Cameroon, the outcome could carry particular weight: defeat may prompt questions about David Pagou’s future as head coach of the national team.
Former Cameroon national-team physical trainer Dr Narcisse Tinkeu, who has worked with the under-17, under-20, A’ and senior teams, as well as South Sudan, has also been involved in analysis of the match. Didier Zokora is likewise listed to give his assessment of the contest and its wider implications.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3 October in Ebimpe.
