Côte d’Ivoire: Stade d’Abidjan on the brink of historic Ligue 1 title as season nears climax

Stade d’Abidjan could end a 56-year wait for domestic glory this weekend if results align in their favour on Matchday 29 of the 2024–2025 Ivorian Ligue 1 campaign.

With 56 points at the top of the table, the five-time champions travel to face 10th-placed Zoman FC at Robert Champroux Stadium on Sunday evening.

Victory would move Kouadio Koffi’s side one step closer to the title, but for the Yéyés to be crowned champions before the final round, they will also need help from elsewhere.

Second-placed ASEC Mimosas, on 53 points, are set to meet eighth-placed Bouaké FC, while third-placed AFAD du Plateau, who trail Stade d’Abidjan by four points, take on struggling SOL FC.

Both contenders are still mathematically in the race but no longer control their destiny.

There are two potential scenarios that would see the title decided this weekend.

If Stade d’Abidjan secure all three points and ASEC Mimosas drop points—either drawing or losing to Bouaké FC—the title will be theirs with a game to spare.

Alternatively, a draw for Stade d’Abidjan could suffice if ASEC are defeated and AFAD either draw or lose.

Stade d’Abidjan’s title ambitions have stirred excitement, with the club chasing its first Ligue 1 crown since 1969.

Known for their storied past, including African Cup of Champions Clubs glory in 1966, the club now stands on the verge of writing a new chapter.

While the focus rests on the title race, the bottom end of the table presents its own drama.

AS Denguélé, already relegated after losing to ASEC last week, are preparing for life in Ligue 2.

They face ISCA, currently ninth, while 15th-placed Lys Sassandra remain in deep trouble and cannot afford anything less than a win against 13th-placed FC OSA in San Pedro.

Elsewhere, Stella Club face SOA, FC San Pedro meet Racing Club Abidjan, and FC Mouna host CO Korhogo.

All matches will have an impact on final standings, with teams jostling for position and survival as the curtain draws near.

Matchday 29 fixtures (All times GMT):

Friday, May 9 – Robert Champroux Stadium
15:30: Stella Club vs SOA
18:00: ISCA vs AS Denguélé

Sunday, May 11

18:00: ASEC Mimosas vs Bouaké FC – Ebimpé Olympic Stadium
18:00: Zoman FC vs Stade d’Abidjan – Robert Champroux Stadium

All eyes will be on Champroux and Ebimpé as the season’s penultimate weekend promises high drama.
