Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United has become increasingly uncertain, with a contract standoff threatening to overshadow the club’s pre-season plans.
The Swedish-Eritrean striker finds himself at a crossroads, as negotiations over an improved deal have stalled amid widening expectations between the player and the club.
Earlier in the summer, Isak was on Liverpool’s radar as a potential marquee signing. A £120 million approach was explored before the Merseyside club turned their focus to Hugo Ekitike.
Newcastle stood firm on their valuation and resisted all attempts to lure their talisman away.
While Isak did not push for a transfer, he remains open-minded about his next step—yet neither a clear exit path nor a resolution on his future at St. James’ Park has emerged.
At the heart of the deadlock lies a significant wage disparity. Isak, under contract until 2028 and currently earning slightly over £100,000 per week, is reportedly seeking close to £300,000 to commit long-term.
Newcastle, valuing him at up to £150 million, are unwilling to exceed £200,000 a week.
Meanwhile, the club is actively exploring alternatives, with bids for Yoane Wissa and interest in RB Leipzig’s Lois Openda. A Saudi move could suit all parties, but Newcastle’s ideal outcome remains keeping Isak—on their terms.
