Joseph Boyamba is closing in on a return to Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team, with multiple German media sources reporting that the forward is in advanced negotiations to rejoin the club where he once captained the side.
The 28-year-old Congolese striker previously spent two seasons with Borussia Dortmund II between 2018 and 2020.
During that stint, he emerged as a key figure in the squad, ultimately earning the captain’s armband.
However, his ambitions to break into the senior team led to his departure after failing to secure a first-team role.
Now, with the Regionalliga side seeking both leadership and familiarity within their ranks, Boyamba’s return is seen as a move that would provide immediate stability and experience.
A verbal agreement is already in place, and talks are said to be progressing positively.
The coaching staff at Dortmund II believe Boyamba’s prior connection to the club will ease his reintegration.
His knowledge of the environment and previous leadership role are viewed as valuable assets in a side looking to maintain competitive form in Germany’s third tier.
After leaving Dortmund, Boyamba’s career took him across several German clubs, including a stint at Schalke 04 and more recently at Rot-Weiss Essen, where he featured in just 16 matches last season.
Earlier in the campaign, he played for SV Elversberg in the 2. Bundesliga, contributing during their push for promotion to the Bundesliga—a campaign that ultimately fell short against Heidenheim in the play-offs.
Despite limited game time and impact in recent seasons, Boyamba’s potential return to Dortmund II represents a chance to revive his form in familiar surroundings.
His technical ability, work ethic, and leadership have remained admired by coaches, and the club sees his presence as instrumental in guiding younger players.
Boyamba’s potential arrival would mark a strategic addition for Borussia Dortmund II, who continue to blend youth development with experienced professionals to maintain their performance levels in the competitive 3. Liga.
If the deal is finalised, it could provide the platform Boyamba needs to rejuvenate his career and offer Dortmund II a valuable asset both on and off the pitch.
