Congolese midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau targeted by Everton in potential €20m move from Lille

Everton have set their sights on LOSC Lille’s rising star Ngal’ayel Mukau, as the Premier League side explore a potential €20 million deal for the young Congolese international ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a breakout season with Lille, rapidly establishing himself as a central figure in Paulo Fonseca’s side. Mukau, who joined the French club from Belgian outfit KV Mechelen last summer for €5 million, is under contract until June 2029.

Despite his short time in Ligue 1, his performances have sparked growing interest across Europe, with Everton reportedly emerging as frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Mukau has featured in 30 matches for Lille this season across all competitions, including the Champions League, where his composure, stamina, and technical ability have drawn attention.

Though his attacking output stands at one goal and three assists, his impact in midfield has gone beyond statistics. His robust defensive contributions, sharp passing, and ability to transition play have made him one of the standout young African talents in European football.

The former Mechelen midfielder’s rapid rise has surprised many. Initially seen as a promising prospect, Mukau exceeded expectations with his immediate adaptation to top-tier French football.

His maturity on the pitch, coupled with his high work rate, has made him an indispensable asset for Lille over the course of the 2024–25 season.

According to reports, Everton have been monitoring Mukau’s development closely. The Merseyside club have reportedly sent scouts to assess the player in recent weeks and are now weighing up a formal offer.

Sources close to the situation suggest the Toffees are prepared to submit a bid in the region of €20 million—well above Mukau’s current estimated market value of €15 million, as listed on Transfermarkt.

Lille, aware of Mukau’s growing profile, may face a difficult decision should a formal offer arrive. Though the club signed the player on a long-term deal and are not actively looking to sell, the financial lure of a significant profit within just one season may influence negotiations.

Moreover, the Premier League’s appeal and the opportunity for Mukau to test himself in England’s top flight could play a role in the player’s own thinking.

Born in Antwerp, Belgium, and representing the Democratic Republic of Congo at international level, Mukau’s blend of European technical schooling and African tenacity has made him a unique midfield profile. He is also among the most valuable African U23 midfielders heading into the 2025–26 campaign.

For Everton, who are seeking to rejuvenate their squad after a challenging domestic campaign, Mukau would represent a strategic investment in youth and dynamism.

With his versatility and engine, the Congolese midfielder could slot into various tactical systems—qualities that make him an appealing target for the Toffees’ recruitment staff.

As the transfer window approaches, Lille now face the prospect of a key player potentially departing after just one season.

With Mukau’s stock rising quickly, this summer could mark the next big step in a career that’s only just getting started.
