Saint-Étienne defender Dylan Batubinsika was assaulted following his side’s 3-1 defeat against Nice in Ligue 1 over the weekend.
The Congolese international, who has earned six caps for his country, was targeted by an unidentified individual as players were departing the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to reports from Actu Saint-Étienne, relayed by L’Équipe.
The assailant approached Batubinsika’s vehicle before delivering a punch. The 29-year-old defender did not sustain any injuries and has not yet filed a complaint regarding the incident.
Saint-Étienne are enduring a challenging campaign, currently sitting second from bottom in Ligue 1 as they battle to avoid relegation.
The incident has added to the club’s turbulent season as they struggle to secure their top-flight status.
Batubinsika, who joined Saint-Étienne last summer, has made a significant contribution to the team despite their difficult run.
His defensive performances have been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise tough season for the club.
