AFCON 2015: Congo Celebrates Historic Return After 14-Year Absence
After 14 years in the wilderness, Congo has returned to the Africa Cup of Nations, and the celebration back home was nothing short of jubilant. Following their decisive 1-0 victory over Sudan, which sealed their qualification for the 2015 tournament, the Red Devils were welcomed like national heroes.
The players toured the city in an open-top bus, cheered on by ecstatic supporters lining the streets. For a country that had not tasted AFCON football since the 2000 edition, this qualification marks a moment of pride and national unity.
Head coach Claude Leroy, a seasoned veteran of African football, was visibly moved by the reception.
“I have experienced many exceptional moments in my career. I have been lucky, but this is one of the rarest moments I have ever had,” he told Adiac-Congo.com.
Leroy, known for his ability to rebuild and inspire African teams, has once again proven his pedigree. Under his guidance, Congo not only defied expectations but also rekindled hope in a football-loving nation hungry for success.
The 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea will now see Congo return to the continental stage, where the team will look to ride the wave of national support and perhaps write a new chapter in their football history.
