Como renew Roberta Picchi contract until 2028 after breast cancer diagnosis

Como 1907 have extended the contract of Roberta Picchi until the end of the 2027-28 season, just days after the 34-year-old Italian was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Picchi plays for Como in Italy’s women’s top flight and is currently undergoing treatment. The club announced the contract renewal on Monday, sending a strong message of support to the midfielder while she faces the challenge away from the football pitch.

The club also appealed for Picchi’s privacy as she concentrates on her recovery.

“At this time, we ask that Roberta’s privacy be respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery,” the statement added.

Picchi responded with an emotional message on her social media accounts, thanking Como for what she described as an exceptional gesture.

“Nothing is guaranteed, and I am lucky. It is time to play my match, but I will come back more determined,” she wrote.

Her brief message reflected the fighting spirit with which she is approaching the difficult period. Picchi regards the battle against the illness as a new challenge, one that has begun away from the football field, and has vowed to return stronger than before.
