Cole Palmer made history in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, setting a new Premier League record for the most successful penalties scored consecutively.
The 22-year-old forward not only equalled Yaya Touré’s long-standing record of 11 consecutive successful penalties, but also broke it, scoring a 12th to secure his place in the record books.
Palmer’s first penalty came after Yves Bissouma fouled Moisés Caicedo in the penalty area.
The Chelsea forward calmly converted, leveling the score at 2-2 after Tottenham had initially taken the lead.
The goal was Palmer’s 11th successful penalty in a row, equalling Touré’s record.
However, Palmer was not done. In the second half, he was brought down by Spurs midfielder Pape Matar Sarr inside the box, earning a second penalty.
Once again, Palmer stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick with precision, making it 12 consecutive successful penalties.
This moment marked the achievement of a new Premier League record, surpassing Touré’s impressive feat.
Beyond his personal achievement, Palmer’s performance played a crucial role in Chelsea’s position in the league.
His brace from the penalty spot helped the Blues secure a point and climb to second place in the Premier League table, just four points behind leaders Liverpool.
Liverpool’s match against Everton was postponed, which further emphasized the significance of Chelsea’s result.
In addition to his penalty success, Palmer also etched his name in Chelsea’s history books by surpassing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s long-standing record for goal contributions in a calendar year.
Palmer’s latest assist and goals bring his tally to 30 goal contributions in 2024, surpassing Hasselbaink’s 29 from 2001.
The Dutch striker had scored 69 goals and provided 29 assists during his four years at Stamford Bridge, a remarkable record that Palmer has now exceeded.
Cole Palmer’s historical achievements on Saturday not only added to his growing reputation but also bolstered Chelsea’s pursuit of success this season, with the young forward playing an increasingly influential role in the team’s attacking efforts.
