Cody Gakpo future in focus as Manchester City talks advance

Manchester City have stepped up their efforts to sign Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo before the transfer window closes, with negotiations involving the Netherlands international’s representatives now at an advanced stage.

City are seeking to strengthen their attacking options following the departures of Omar Marmoush and Savinho to Tottenham Hotspur. Gakpo has emerged as one of their leading targets, and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says the club are working seriously to complete a deal.

Liverpool, however, are not prepared to approve Gakpo’s move unless they can first bring in a suitable replacement.

Romano reports that discussions between Manchester City and Gakpo’s camp have progressed, while previous reports have suggested the player is open to leaving Liverpool during the current transfer window.

The condition set by Liverpool means the Premier League club’s recruitment plans could determine whether the proposed move goes ahead. They are already looking to add to their attacking options and are understood to be close to signing Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.

Liverpool have also opened negotiations over a possible deal for Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr as they consider alternatives in attack.

Gakpo remains part of Liverpool’s first-team plans for now. He featured in the club’s most recent match against Nottingham Forest, providing the assist for Alexander Isak’s opening goal.

That game also saw Spanish winger Victor Munoz attract attention after coming on as a substitute and scoring an impressive goal to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw.

Manchester City’s interest in Gakpo has intensified because of the changes to their wide attacking options. The departures of Marmoush and Savinho have left the club looking for further reinforcements in the winger position, making the Dutchman a prominent option as the deadline approaches.

Gakpo joined Liverpool’s long-term plans by signing a new five-year contract after the club won the Premier League title in 2025. His future has since become a subject of increasing interest as the transfer deadline draws closer.

The next stage of Liverpool’s recruitment activity is therefore central to the situation. If the club can secure a replacement, Gakpo could be allowed to consider a move to Manchester City. Until then, Liverpool’s requirement remains a significant obstacle to any final agreement.
