Club Africain have been crowned Tunisian Ligue 1 champions for the first time in more than a decade after a dramatic 1-0 victory over defending champions Esperance on Sunday, sealing the title in unforgettable fashion at the death.

The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Ghaith Zaalouni unleashed a stunning strike from outside the penalty area to secure all three points.

The goal was set up by a swift counter-attack led by substitute Sadok Kadida, whose precise delivery into the box found Zaalouni in space to deliver the title-winning blow.

The late winner sparked wild celebrations among the visiting Club Africain supporters, who witnessed their side reclaim domestic supremacy in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable.

The result lifted Club Africain to 65 points, putting them five clear of Esperance with just one match remaining.

The defeat effectively ended any hope of a late title defence for Esperance, who have dominated the league over the past two seasons.

The triumph marks Club Africain’s 14th Tunisian league title and their first since the 2014-15 campaign, ending a wait of more than 10 years to return to the summit of Tunisian football.

It is a historic achievement for the club, capped by a moment of individual brilliance and collective resilience in a title race that went down to the wire.
