Claude Le Roy backs Samuel Eto’o amid Onana and Aboubakar exclusions

Claude Le Roy has publicly defended Samuel Eto’o regarding the controversial exclusion of André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar from Cameroon’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Speaking on “Talents d’Afrique,” the veteran coach argued that the selections made by David Pagou reflect strategic considerations rather than personal disputes or undue influence.

The 28-player list published by FECAFOOT sparked immediate debate, with critics questioning the omission of Onana, Aboubakar, and Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui.

Many observers speculated that the decision stemmed from friction between the Ministry of Sports and the federation, as well as Eto’o’s alleged role in shaping the squad.

Le Roy, who managed Cameroon from 1986 to 1988, dismissed these theories.

He stressed that the choice to leave out certain experienced stars can serve the team’s long-term performance and cohesion.

“Expert players are assets for a coach, but they still need to lift the team as a whole. I understand why they didn’t pick André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar.

If I were managing this team today, I wouldn’t have selected either of them. Some players past their prime can become toxic and no longer contribute much… A national team coach isn’t there to please everyone, but to build the best possible team,” Le Roy said.

David Pagou defended his selections as part of a broader plan to integrate a younger generation into the Indomitable Lions.

The coach emphasized that the squad reflects a vision for renewal and adaptability, even if it meant leaving out established leaders.

Le Roy’s intervention provides Eto’o with a significant endorsement, framing the controversial decisions as rooted in sporting logic rather than personal rivalry or administrative maneuvering.

By highlighting the importance of team balance and long-term objectives, Le Roy reframes the debate around Cameroon’s AFCON preparations in a more professional and performance-oriented light.

The upcoming tournament will test this approach, as fans eagerly await to see whether the younger squad can perform at the level expected of the Indomitable Lions.
