Djibril Cisse has endorsed Liverpool’s pursuit of Hugo Ekitike, urging fans to be patient as the young striker prepares for the next step in his career.
The former Reds forward believes the 22-year-old will fit into Liverpool’s system but cautioned against expecting immediate impact at Anfield.
Ekitike, who is of Cameroonian descent, is on the verge of a high-profile move from Eintracht Frankfurt after the German side accepted a £79 million bid from Liverpool.
The France U21 international has attracted interest across Europe, and his potential arrival marks a significant investment in the club’s attacking future.
Speaking to L’Équipe, Cisse backed the deal and offered insight into what Ekitike could bring to Arne Slot’s side.
“I think he will adapt well to the Reds’ style of play,” Cisse said. “In his role, a bit of a ‘target man’, a la Peter Crouch if you like, he’s the only one in the squad. The manager will be able to exploit him.”
However, the former France international also advised caution regarding expectations.
“We shouldn’t expect him to be a starter straight away: (Mohamed) Salah and other big names are still up front. Above all, he’ll have to get used to the intensity of English football.”
Ekitike’s arrival would add another dimension to Liverpool’s frontline, providing a physical presence with technical ability.
As the Reds continue reshaping their squad, the French-Cameroonian forward is seen as a long-term option capable of developing under Slot’s guidance.
