Chuba Akpom has reaffirmed his commitment to representing Nigeria, despite being overlooked by the national team since switching his allegiance in 2019.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Akpom played for England at youth level, featuring in the Under-16, 17, 19, 20, and 21 teams.
However, five years ago, he opted to represent Nigeria at senior level but has yet to receive a call-up.
His absence from the squad has been puzzling, especially after a standout season with Middlesbrough in the English Championship, where he netted 28 goals and provided two assists in 40 appearances.
Even now, playing for Ajax, the situation remains unchanged.
On Thursday, Akpom assisted Ajax’s opening goal in their Europa League clash against Galatasaray.
Speaking after the match, the former Arsenal striker expressed his frustration at being continuously overlooked.
I don’t know why I haven’t been invited to the Super Eagles.
Maybe because there are many top strikers,” he told journalist Oma Akatugba.
But for the team to improve, players should be selected based on merit.
Chuba Akpom still open to Nigeria call-up despite years of exclusion
Those who perform well should get a chance.
I always give 100 percent. I switched to Nigeria a long time ago, in 2019.
If I get called up, that’s great. If not, I will keep working hard.”
This season, Akpom has registered eight goals and one assist in 32 appearances for Ajax.
While Nigeria boasts top attacking options like Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface, Akpom remains hopeful that continued strong performances will earn him a long-awaited call-up to the national team.
