Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku isn’t reaching his full potential, and John Obi Mikel thinks it’s all about where he’s lining up on the pitch.
The former Nigerian midfielder has urged manager Enzo Maresca to rethink using the Frenchman as a striker, arguing it’s a mismatch for his skills.
“He’s not a number 9. Every time he plays there, he just looks lost,” Mikel said on his podcast.
“I was watching him against Brentford, he looked lost every time. He couldn’t hold up the play, couldn’t run behind, and couldn’t run into the channel. It just looks like he doesn’t know what he’s doing there, because that is not his position, he’s a number ten. He’s not a bad player. Yes, he’s had his injuries, and sometimes that slows you down quite a bit. He’s still young, there’s still so much that he can give. And I believe that he’s still a great player, but we need to find the best position for him.”
This season, Nkunku has featured in 26 matches, netting three goals and adding two assists in the Premier League.
