Chiefs Ladies return to top with 3-0 win over Mamelodi 11 Stars

Kaizer Chiefs Ladies returned to the top of the Gauteng Sasol Women’s Provincial League with a 3-0 victory over Mamelodi 11 Stars Ladies at Naturena Village on Sunday.

The result extended their unbeaten run to 15 matches and strengthened their promotion prospects with one round of the league season remaining.

Unathi Mabena’s side have won 14 of those games and drawn one, scoring 38 goals during the unbeaten sequence.

Chiefs Ladies had entered the match after a narrow 1-0 win against Hallelujah Zebra Force on Heritage Day, a result which had further improved their chances of securing promotion.

They made a fast start against Mamelodi 11 Stars, with Lerato Makhanya opening the scoring only three minutes after kick-off.

Lumka Qhekeka, one of the team’s standout players, added a second goal in the 17th minute to give the home side a commanding advantage at half-time.

The pattern continued after the interval, as Matobane Moshugi scored Chiefs Ladies’ third goal to complete a convincing home victory.

The three points lifted Amakhosazana to 67 points and put them back at the summit, ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and Wits University.

Wits are third on 66 points, leaving Chiefs Ladies and their rivals separated by just one point going into the final round of matches.

Chiefs Ladies also have an important advantage in the promotion race because Mamelodi Sundowns are not eligible for promotion to top-flight football next season. Sundowns already have a team competing in the Hollywoodbet Super League.

Only one of Chiefs Ladies and Wits University can progress to the national playoffs after matchday 30, with the playoffs offering a route to a place in the Hollywoodbet SL next season.

The title and promotion race will therefore be decided in the final round, with Chiefs Ladies aiming to finish their campaign at the top of the table.

Their final league fixture is at home against the University of Johannesburg on 17 October.
