Manchester United U21 coach Adam Lawrence has expressed strong satisfaction with the development of Chido Obi, insisting the young striker remains on the right trajectory despite limited senior involvement this season.

The 18-year-old forward, who made his first-team breakthrough last term, has spent the current campaign moving between Manchester United’s U18 and U21 sides.

While that shift could have disrupted his momentum, Lawrence believes the experience has ultimately strengthened the player’s mentality and long-term growth.

“I do think that has been a good thing for him on the whole,” Lawrence is quoted by the Daily Mail.

Obi’s brief exposure to senior football raised expectations, but his absence from the first-team environment this season has required a period of adjustment.

Lawrence acknowledged the psychological challenge young players often face when stepping back from elite-level involvement, noting that such moments can test resilience and focus.

“But I think credit to Chido. What he’s obviously done over this period is he’s gone, “‘this is the situation that I’m in. This is what I’m working towards to help take my game to the next level and then I’m going to go after it’.”

The United youth coach emphasised that Obi’s response to this phase has been particularly encouraging, highlighting a professional attitude that sets him apart from peers who may struggle under similar circumstances.

As the season approaches its final stretch, Lawrence underlined the importance of sustained application, suggesting that consistency in training and performance will be key to unlocking the next stage of Obi’s career.

“So that is the bit between now and the end of the season that he needs to continue to focus on.”

Lawrence also addressed the demanding approach taken by the coaching staff, framing it as a sign of belief rather than criticism.

“Listen, we’re pushing Chido, we’re challenging Chido. We want him to go up levels and keep improving… He’s definitely in a good place at the moment.”
