Nigerian forward Chidera Ejuke has voiced his support for Kelechi Iheanacho, expressing confidence that the striker will rediscover his best form at Sevilla despite a challenging start to life at the Spanish club.
Iheanacho, 28, joined Sevilla on a free transfer last summer but struggled to make an impact, failing to score in nine appearances.
As a result, he was sent on loan to English Championship side Middlesbrough in January in search of regular playing time.
Belief in Iheanacho’s Quality
Ejuke, who has followed Iheanacho’s career closely, remains convinced of his compatriot’s abilities and believes his struggles in Spain do not define his overall talent.
“You can’t take the credit away from Iheanacho because we all know who he is,” Ejuke said. “With his Premier League success with Leicester, he’s a top player.”
Iheanacho played a crucial role for Leicester City before their relegation from the Premier League, contributing key goals and assists in both domestic and European competitions.
His time at the King Power Stadium included an FA Cup triumph in 2021, where he was instrumental in Leicester’s journey to the title.
Adapting to a New Challenge
Ejuke acknowledged that settling into a new league is never easy, especially in a system different from what Iheanacho was accustomed to in England.
However, he remains optimistic that the forward will return to Sevilla with renewed confidence and make an impact next season.
“Sometimes, adapting to a new team and a different league takes time,” Ejuke noted. “Iheanacho has the quality, and I believe he’ll bounce back stronger.”
While on loan at Middlesbrough, Iheanacho has been working to regain match fitness and form, with hopes that regular minutes in the English second tier will help him rediscover his sharpness in front of goal.
Sevilla, meanwhile, have struggled in La Liga this season, prompting speculation that the Nigerian striker could still have a role to play upon his return.
Future at Sevilla
Despite his struggles in Spain, Sevilla are known for their ability to revive the careers of talented players, particularly those with experience at the highest level.
Iheanacho’s proven goal-scoring record in the Premier League suggests he has the potential to be a valuable asset for the Andalusian club if given the right opportunities.
Ejuke’s words of encouragement reflect the wider sentiment among Nigerian football fans, who hope to see Iheanacho back to his best, whether in La Liga or elsewhere.
For now, the 28-year-old’s focus remains on finishing the season strongly at Middlesbrough before assessing his future with Sevilla.
