Chicago Fire boosted as Mbokazi returns to first-team training

Chicago Fire have received a timely boost in their push up the Eastern Conference standings, with Bafana Bafana defender Mbokazi returning to first-team training after being sidelined since the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The former Orlando Pirates defender has not played competitive football since coming back from the tournament with South Africa in July. His return to training gives Chicago renewed encouragement as they prepare for their next Major League Soccer fixture against Toronto FC on Saturday.

Chicago initially announced that Mbokazi was expected to miss the rest of the year after suffering a thigh tear. However, the club confirmed on Friday that the central defender had rejoined the senior squad for training.

“Some new and some familiar faces out at training,” the club posted on social media.

Although there is no confirmation yet of when Mbokazi could return to competitive action, his presence on the training pitch represents a significant step forward. Chicago have not indicated that he will be available for Saturday’s match, and it remains unclear whether he will be included in the squad to face Toronto FC.

For now, the defender’s return offers a positive development for both club and country. Chicago are attempting to maintain their progress in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference, while Mbokazi is working towards a return after a lengthy period away from competitive football.

His absence began after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the thigh injury initially expected to keep him out for the remainder of the calendar year. Friday’s update therefore marks a change in the outlook surrounding his recovery, even though a playing return has yet to be set.

Chicago’s immediate focus will be the visit of Toronto FC on Saturday. The match will provide the club with an opportunity to continue its climb in the Eastern Conference, while Mbokazi’s involvement will depend on his fitness and the coaching staff’s assessment following his return to first-team work.

The defender’s progress will also be watched closely by Bafana Bafana, having last represented South Africa at the World Cup before beginning his recovery. For Chicago, however, the priority is to determine when he can safely move from training back into competitive football.

Mbokazi’s return comes as Chicago continue their campaign and seek further momentum in the Eastern Conference. While his comeback date remains uncertain, the club’s confirmation that he is training again is a notable development after the earlier expectation that his season had ended.
