Chibuike Nwaiwu credits Nigerian coaches for shaping his versatility at Trabzonspor
Chibuike Nwaiwu says the tactical education he received in Nigeria has played a decisive role in his development as a defender at Trabzonspor.
The Nigerian player, who has produced a series of steady performances in the Süper Lig, spoke to local media about his playing style and the influences that have shaped his career.
In comments reported by Complete Sports and originally published by Turkish outlet Yenisafak, the defender described himself as a determined and physical competitor who thrives in defensive battles.
Nwaiwu said his approach to the game is based on strength in duels and a disciplined defensive mindset, qualities he believes are essential to succeed in top-level football.
At the same time, he emphasised the importance of maintaining control and avoiding unnecessary risks when defending.
“I don’t like taking risks on the field. I prefer to play a safe and solid game. I like to win the ball,” he said.
While his physical style has become one of his trademarks, Nwaiwu pointed to the guidance of two coaches during his early development in Nigeria as the foundation of his tactical awareness.
According to the defender, former international Finidi George and coach Koc Yem played key roles in shaping his versatility on the pitch.
“My coaches in Nigeria, Finidi George and Koc Yem, taught me to play both as a centre-back and as a defensive midfielder. Perhaps this characteristic helped me to progress,” he explained.
Learning to operate in two positions allowed Nwaiwu to broaden his understanding of the game and adapt to different tactical demands.
That flexibility has since become one of his strengths in European football, where clubs increasingly value players capable of filling multiple roles.
The defender believes his time at Trabzonspor offers an opportunity to continue building his career at a high level.
His performances in Turkey have strengthened his ambitions beyond club football as he seeks recognition on the international stage.
Nwaiwu hopes to use the platform provided by Trabzonspor to secure a place with the Nigeria national football team, widely known as the Super Eagles.
Achieving success with both club and country remains his long-term objective as he continues to establish himself in European football.
