Chelsea make third summer addition as France defender Lacroix arrives from Crystal Palace on long-term deal

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, making the 26-year-old their third acquisition of the summer as new manager Xabi Alonso reshapes his squad for the coming season.

The Premier League club announced that Lacroix has agreed a contract running until 2032, extending over eight years. Chelsea did not disclose the transfer fee, but the BBC reported that the deal is worth £52m.

Lacroix follows Morgan Rogers and Marco Balestra into Stamford Bridge during the current transfer window, as the club continues a policy of recruiting players on lengthy contracts to underpin a long-term rebuild under Alonso.

Chelsea active on multiple fronts in transfer market

Alongside the arrival of Lacroix, Chelsea are in talks over further reinforcements. The club is currently negotiating a move for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea are also working towards finalising previously agreed deals scheduled for 2025, involving winger Giovanni Quenda and striker Emanuel Emegha. Those agreements are planned as part of a staggered recruitment strategy looking beyond the current campaign.

Lacroix joins after a standout spell at Crystal Palace, where he became a key figure under head coach Oliver Glasner. Palace signed the centre-back from Wolfsburg in 2024 for £15.5m, and he quickly established himself as a mainstay in their defence.

European success and World Cup impact

During his time at Selhurst Park, Lacroix made 55 appearances in all competitions. He played a central role in what was described as a historic season for Crystal Palace, helping the club win the UEFA Europa Conference League – the first major European trophy in Palace’s history.

His performances at club level strengthened his position on the international stage. Lacroix featured for France at the 2026 World Cup, appearing in three matches. That included the third-place play-off against England, in which France finished fourth overall in the tournament.

Speaking after completing his move to Stamford Bridge, Lacroix underlined his enthusiasm for joining Chelsea and aligning himself with the club’s ambitions.

“I am very happy to be part of this great club,” he said. “Everyone knows Chelsea’s history and their tradition of winning, and to be part of that is a very proud moment for me.”

Shared vision with Alonso

Lacroix said discussions with Alonso convinced him that his own ambitions matched those of the club and its new head coach.

“When I spoke with the manager, I saw that we have the same direction and the same desire for this club,” he added. “We want to win, and when you see the quality of the players here and everything around the club, achieving that is possible.”

The defender stressed that his targets at Chelsea are firmly centred on silverware.

“The ambition is to lift trophies, and I can’t wait to help make that happen,” he said.

Lacroix will now link up with his new team-mates as Chelsea continue their preparations for the new season, with Alonso aiming to blend his latest arrival into a squad still being reshaped in the transfer market.
