Chelsea fans divided over Enzo Fernandez as transfer uncertainty continues

Chelsea supporters gave Enzo Fernandez a mixed reception during Saturday’s friendly win over Real Sociedad, underlining the growing tension around the Argentina midfielder’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Some fans booed Fernandez when his name was read out before kick-off, while others jeered him again after he came on as a substitute during the match, according to the Telegraph.

The response was not universally negative, however. A section of the Chelsea support sang Fernandez’s name, particularly after he took over as captain from Reece James.

The divided reaction comes as Chelsea face a decisive period in their attempts to determine whether Fernandez will remain with the club. His future has been a major feature of the transfer market in recent weeks, with speculation over a possible departure intensifying since the end of last season.

Fernandez had previously been linked with a move to Real Madrid, although the Spanish club later ruled out the possibility of signing him. Manchester City subsequently emerged as the most prominent club showing interest in the midfielder.

Chelsea set a deadline for offers for Fernandez, whose value is estimated at £120m. That deadline passed on Friday evening without Manchester City submitting a bid.

As a result, Chelsea now expect Fernandez to stay at the club for the 2026-27 season, although the possibility of Manchester City making a move at a later stage has not been completely dismissed.

The uncertainty has contributed to a deterioration in the relationship between Fernandez and parts of the Chelsea support. Some fans have been angered by previous hints from the player that he could move to Real Madrid, as well as other incidents that have caused controversy.

One of those moments came during the World Cup, when Fernandez celebrated Argentina’s goal against England in the semi-final. He was later sent off during the final, which Argentina lost to Spain.

Despite the difficult atmosphere surrounding Fernandez, Chelsea completed their preparations for the new season with a 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

New signing Morgan Rogers opened the scoring, before Joao Pedro added the second and third goals for Chelsea. Fernandez began the match on the bench and was introduced as a substitute, placing him at the centre of attention as supporters made their feelings known.

The reception illustrated the uncertainty surrounding a player who remains under contract at Chelsea but has been the subject of sustained transfer speculation. While some supporters continue to back the midfielder, others appear frustrated by the possibility that he could seek a move away from the club.
