Chelsea considering summer exit for French-Ivorian Wesley Fofana as Marseille prepare move

Wesley Fofana

Chelsea are reportedly prepared to part ways with Wesley Fofana during the upcoming summer transfer window, with Marseille among the clubs expressing strong interest in signing the defender.

Fofana, whose promising career has been hampered by recurring injuries, has struggled to make a lasting impact at Stamford Bridge since his big-money move from Leicester City.

The French centre-back, who has Ivorian roots, joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 for a fee in the region of £70 million.

However, he has featured in only 34 matches across all competitions, leading the club’s hierarchy to reassess his future.

According to a report from French outlet Footmercato, Ligue 1 side Marseille have renewed their interest in the 24-year-old and are expected to table a formal approach when the transfer window opens.

Marseille previously attempted to secure Fofana’s services ahead of the 2024/25 season but negotiations did not result in an agreement.

Chelsea, currently undergoing a broader squad reshaping under their sporting directors, are understood to be weighing their options regarding Fofana’s future.

Discussions reportedly include whether to sanction a permanent transfer or allow him to depart on a season-long loan to regain form and fitness elsewhere.

The uncertainty surrounding Fofana’s situation mirrors wider changes at Stamford Bridge, where financial fair play considerations and the need for a leaner, more durable squad are influencing transfer decisions.

If Fofana moves to Marseille, it would mark a return to familiar territory for the Frenchman, who began his professional career with Saint-Étienne before his move to England.

Further developments are expected in the coming weeks as Marseille prepare an official proposal and Chelsea finalise their plans for the summer window.
