Chelsea complete surprise Danny Welbeck move as Xabi Alonso opts for experience

Chelsea have officially signed veteran English striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract, fulfilling a request from new manager Xabi Alonso and marking a departure from the club’s recent transfer policy.

The London club confirmed the move in a statement on Saturday, saying: “Chelsea are delighted to announce the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, one of the Premier League clubs.”

The transfer takes 35-year-old Welbeck back to one of the leading clubs in English football after an impressive campaign at Brighton. It also gives him the opportunity to continue his career in the Premier League under Alonso, who made the experienced forward one of his priorities after taking charge at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Alonso’s appointment represents his first coaching role in the Premier League, following a disappointing spell at Real Madrid. The Spanish manager is understood to have wanted a player familiar with the demands and pressure of English football, and Welbeck’s long career at the top level made him the preferred choice.

Welbeck has previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal before becoming an important member of the Brighton squad. Last season, he scored 14 goals and provided two assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

The transfer was considered a relatively limited financial risk for Chelsea because Welbeck had only one year remaining on his Brighton contract, which ran until June 2027. That situation helped the two clubs reach an agreement on terms considered suitable to both sides, with Welbeck signing a deal lasting two seasons.

His arrival represents a significant change in direction for Chelsea, who have focused heavily on recruiting young players in recent years. The club’s willingness to give Alonso broad authority over transfers was reportedly one of the manager’s main conditions when he joined.

That backing had already been demonstrated by Chelsea’s signing of Morgan Rogers for 138m euros as a welcome gift for the new head coach. The decision to add Welbeck adds a player with considerable experience to a squad that has otherwise been built around younger talent.
