DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba misses Lille clash with Lens
Chancel Mbemba will miss Lille’s Ligue 1 fixture against RC Lens after failing to return to his club on time following international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The 31 year old defender, who captains the national team, was involved in his country’s historic qualification for the World Cup earlier this week.
DR Congo secured their place by defeating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final on Tuesday, marking their first appearance at the tournament in 52 years.
Following the victory, the Congolese government declared a national holiday, and Mbemba was required to attend an official ceremony with President Félix Tshisekedi.
This obligation delayed his return to France, leaving Lille without one of their key defensive players for the weekend match.
Lille have expressed frustration over the situation and have taken formal action.
“The Congolese federation decided to keep the players until Monday, whereas FIFA regulations stipulate that players must be back at their club 48 hours after the match.
Mbemba should have been back on Thursday, but that was not the case ,” a statement said.
Club president Olivier Létang confirmed that the matter has been escalated. “We have referred the matter to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
This sets a dangerous precedent for all clubs with international players under contract. The Congolese federation only informed us, via a brief message, that the player had returned later ,” he said.
The absence of Mbemba represents a setback for Lille ahead of an important league encounter, as the club must now adjust its defensive plans without one of its most experienced players.
At the same time, the episode highlights the challenges clubs can face when balancing international commitments with domestic competitions.
