In the CHAN 2014 qualifiers, Zambia faced disappointment as they failed to secure a spot in the final phase. Despite a promising 0-0 draw in Harare the previous week, Zambia lost 1-0 to Zimbabwe in Ndola. Charles Sibanda scored the decisive goal in the 64th minute, preventing Zambia, led by coach Hervé Renard, from participating in the African competition for a second time after 2009. Zimbabwe’s victory served as revenge, considering Zambia’s recent win over them in the COSAFA Cup. With Zimbabwe’s win, the total number of qualifiers for CHAN 2014 reached 14 teams, including South Africa (host), Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Uganda, Gabon, and Zimbabwe.
