Champions League: Szoboszlai strike brings Liverpool level with Atletico Madrid at half-time

Liverpool came from behind to draw 1-1 with Atletico de Madrid at half-time in their Champions League league-phase match, with Dominik Szoboszlai scoring the equaliser shortly before the interval.

Marcos Llorente put Atletico ahead after 15 minutes, finishing a swift move created by Julian Alvarez. Alvarez played an excellent pass behind Liverpool’s defence, sending Llorente through on goal before the Atletico midfielder calmly struck the ball into the net.

The lead could have been extended moments later when Alvarez tested Liverpool’s goalkeeper with a shot from inside the penalty area, but the effort was saved successfully.

Atletico continued to threaten from distance. Alex Baena sent a shot narrowly wide, while another effort from Alvarez, this time from outside the box, was also kept out by the goalkeeper.

Liverpool initially struggled to create clear chances, with a series of short passes in midfield failing to trouble the Atletico defence or goalkeeper. As the half progressed, however, Arne Slot’s side began to apply greater pressure in search of an equaliser.

Liverpool thought they had an opportunity to build an attack when a cross was delivered into the Atletico penalty area from a corner, but Llorente cleared the danger effectively.

There was also an offside decision against Liverpool forward Alexander Isak as the visitors continued to look for a way back into the match.

After 30 minutes, Atletico remained in front, although Liverpool were increasingly involved in the contest. Their attacking pressure eventually produced the equalising goal.

Ronald Araujo supplied the pass for Szoboszlai, who controlled the ball inside the penalty area before sending a low shot beyond the Paris goalkeeper and into the net. The goal restored parity before the break and gave Liverpool a reward for their sustained efforts to level the score.

The match feed recorded one minute of added time at the end of the first half, which finished with the teams level.

Liverpool eventually found the breakthrough they needed through Szoboszlai, whose low finish ensured the Champions League match entered the interval at 1-1.
