The idea of creating a European Super League, previously championed by former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz, has resurfaced, this time proposed by Galatasaray president Ünal Aysal. Aysal envisions the project, set to launch in less than ten years, as a means to bring new energy to European football.
The proposed European Super League would feature a promotion-relegation system, involving twenty clubs with three to five teams moving up and down each season. Aysal mentioned that this tournament could be controlled by UEFA, or not, providing some flexibility in its governance.
In seeking support for the project, Aysal expressed optimism, stating, “No one can say no… For the moment, everything is simply put on paper, nothing is defined yet. But Manchester United, Real Madrid, or PSG could not say no to this project.”
However, the European Club Association (ECA) does not share the same enthusiasm. In response to Aysal’s announcement, the ECA stated that it was unaware of the existence of such a project. The association emphasized its satisfaction with the current European competitions and denied any discussions or plans for a European Super League.
As of now, the idea of the Champions League disappearing remains an illusion, and the proposed European Super League is met with skepticism from existing football associations.
