Cesc Fàbregas expresses frustration over Assane Diao’s AFCON call-up
Cesc Fàbregas has admitted his frustration after Assane Diao received an official call-up to Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations squad, revealing that talks with national team coach Pape Thiaw ended on a sour note.
Speaking on Saturday, the Como head coach confirmed that he held direct discussions with Thiaw regarding the 20-year-old forward but described the exchange as unsuccessful.
Fàbregas reacted openly when journalists questioned him about Diao’s inclusion in Senegal’s 28-man squad for the tournament in Morocco.
The Spanish coach has remained disappointed throughout a lengthy and tense process that involved negotiations between Como, the Senegalese Football Federation, the national team staff, and himself.
Despite those discussions, Senegal selected the former Real Betis attacker for the competition, which runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
During his press conference, Fàbregas chose his words carefully but did not hide his dissatisfaction. “I prefer not to elaborate too much on the subject,” he said.
“He was called up, and I spoke to him after the Inter match. He knows my opinion well. I also spoke to his national team coach, but the conversation didn’t end very well. They have every right to do so. Diao will leave if he wishes.”
Fàbregas confirmed that Diao will indeed join Senegal’s preparations, bringing clarity to a situation that had remained uncertain for weeks.
The coach explained that the striker will report to the Lions’ training camp on Tuesday, following Como’s league fixture against AS Roma on Monday.
The decision brings an end to speculation surrounding Diao’s availability during a crucial part of Como’s season.
While Fàbregas acknowledged Senegal’s right to select the player, his remarks reflected lingering frustration over losing a key attacking option during the winter period.
Diao’s departure now appears settled, with all parties accepting the outcome. The focus for Como shifts toward managing his absence, while Senegal prepares to integrate the young forward into their squad ahead of the continental tournament.
