Cédric Bakambu could soon make a return to the DR Congo national team, according to head coach Sébastien Desabre.
The Frenchman has underlined the experienced striker’s continued importance to the squad as the Leopards prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures.
“Cédric is a member of the national team. He has always been a pillar of the DRC, even before I arrived.
He was the driving force behind the appeal of these dual nationals. He has a major role and remains part of our project,” Desabre stated.
Bakambu, who currently plays for Spanish side Real Betis, has rediscovered his form at club level.
The former Villarreal forward has registered three goals and two assists this season, performances that could see him earn a recall to the national setup.
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, his return could provide a significant boost to DR Congo’s attacking options.
Desabre, however, remains cautious about selection decisions, insisting that performance and playing time will be key factors in determining the final squad.
“Choices will be made in March. We will analyse his fitness, his playing time and his performances before making a decision,” the coach added.
Bakambu, 32, has been an influential figure for the Congolese team over the years, contributing crucial goals and experience.
His return would add further depth to the squad as DR Congo aims to secure a place in the next World Cup.
The Leopards will resume their qualification campaign in March, and Desabre’s final squad selection will be closely watched by fans eager to see if Bakambu will be included once again.
