Democratic Republic of Congo striker Cedric Bakambu has voiced his support for Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman to claim the African Player of the Year award, praising his standout performances for both club and country.
Speaking in an interview with Sporty Show, Bakambu highlighted Lookman’s achievements during a stellar season with Atalanta and his significant contributions to Nigeria’s national team.
It’s difficult because currently Mohamed Salah is playing very well, but if I have to choose, I would say Lookman, the Atalanta player,” Bakambu remarked.
Lookman’s campaign with Atalanta saw him deliver a series of remarkable performances, including a hat-trick that played a key role in his team’s triumph in the UEFA Europa League.
His attacking prowess was further demonstrated on the international stage, where he helped Nigeria reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Bakambu acknowledged the impressive form of Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, a two-time recipient of the CAF award, but argued that Lookman’s contributions this year make him the leading contender.
It remains to be seen who will ultimately be crowned, but Lookman deserves the award,” he added.
The CAF African Player of the Year award is one of the most prestigious accolades in African football, celebrating individual brilliance and contributions to the sport.
The shortlist for the 2023 award includes top talents from across the continent, with Lookman’s name among the favorites due to his exceptional season.
Fans and analysts alike have praised the Nigerian international for his consistency, creativity, and goal-scoring ability, which have made him a standout figure in both Serie A and African football.
As anticipation builds ahead of CAF’s announcement of the winner, Bakambu’s endorsement adds weight to the growing support for Lookman.
Should he secure the award, Lookman would join an elite list of Nigerian players who have previously claimed the honor, further cementing his status as one of the continent’s brightest stars.
The winner will be revealed at the CAF Awards ceremony, set to take place later this month, in what promises to be a celebration of African football’s finest talents.
