CAS steps in as Zamalek-Al Ahly league dispute heats up

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has officially entered the storm surrounding the unplayed Egyptian League clash between Zamalek and Al Ahly, demanding urgent clarification from the Egyptian Football Association.

The much-anticipated match was set for 11 March at Cairo Stadium. However, Al Ahly did not show up, citing objections to the appointment of foreign referees. The Association of Clubs’ Competitions Committee counted it as a withdrawal, awarding Zamalek a 3-0 win and docking Al Ahly three points.

Later, the Association’s Board overturned the point deduction, triggering confusion and appeals from Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Pyramids. The Appeals Committee backed the match result and penalties.

Unhappy with the outcome, Zamalek and Pyramids took the case to CAS, seeking an urgent ruling. A source revealed that CAS sent an official letter to the Egyptian FA on Thursday, requesting a formal explanation.

The decision now rests with CAS as tensions rise. Al Ahly currently tops the table, two points clear of Pyramids, with just two games left in the title race.
