Carrick backs Joshua Zirkzee after Sunderland stalemate
Michael Carrick has refused to single out Joshua Zirkzee for criticism after the striker’s muted display in Manchester United’s goalless draw away to Sunderland.
Zirkzee came under fire from fans and pundits for lacking physical presence up front and failing to make the most of the few chances that came his way.
Carrick, however, stressed that the game was a collective struggle rather than one player’s failure. “To be honest, for all the boys, I thought it was just a tough game,” the interim head coach said, noting the difficulty of an away trip where United were often second-best.
He highlighted that there were spells when Zirkzee linked play well, but admitted the forward was “a little bit isolated” at times, something he framed as part of the team’s overall performance rather than an individual flaw.
“I think he played a real part for the team… We’re not judging any individual on one performance today anyway,” Carrick added, pointing out that it is never easy for a player who has not featured regularly to come in and instantly shine. His words offered clear public backing for Zirkzee as United look to regroup for their next fixtures.
