Borussia Dortmund signed Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka on loan with a 35 million euro buyout clause on the last day of the winter transfer window.
The move promised much, but as the calendar nears his loan’s end date June 30, 2025 complications increase significantly.
That expiration lands smack in the middle of the FIFA Club World Cup, and Dortmund isn’t ready to let him slip away just yet. Sky reports that BVB’s legal team is hashing things out with Chelsea’s lawyers, scrambling to extend Chukwuemeka’s stay through the tournament.
The 21-year-old’s stint in Germany hasn’t exactly set the Bundesliga alight. Hampered by three minor injuries, he’s managed just 74 minutes in competitive matches, donning the black and yellow with fleeting glimpses of his potential. Still, there’s a flicker of promise.
Teammate Pascal Groß sang his praises recently, saying, “He is a top player. In his few minutes of play, he has shown what he can do so far.”
Born to Nigerian parents in Austria, Chukwuemeka eventually moved to Northampton, England, where he grew up.
