Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač has expressed satisfaction with the development of Carney Chukwuemeka, who joined the club on loan from Chelsea in January.
The 21-year-old midfielder, of Nigerian descent, has begun to make a positive impact in the Bundesliga after a challenging start to his stint in Germany.
Chukwuemeka, born in Austria to Nigerian parents, moved to England at a young age and has represented England at youth levels.
He remains eligible to play for Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles. His recent performances have caught the attention of Kovač, who praised the midfielder’s technical abilities and potential.
“Carney will return to Chelsea first. What happens after that is still unclear,” Kovač told Ruhr Nachrichten.
“It’s clear that he has quality and that I like him, that we all like him. But Chelsea are smart enough to structure the process in such a way that they will benefit from it.”
Since his arrival, Chukwuemeka has made ten appearances for Dortmund, scoring once.
His loan agreement includes a €35 million option to buy, contingent upon Dortmund qualifying for European competition next season.
Currently, Dortmund sits 10th in the Bundesliga, six points adrift of the European spots.
