English-Nigerian midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka set for permanent switch to Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is set to represent Austria at international level after receiving permission to play for their national team, according to Sky Sport.

Once the final procedure is completed, the 22-year-old will be eligible to feature for Austria in official competitions.

Chukwuemeka has previously played for England at youth level, turning out for the U-19 and U-20 sides and helping the U-19s win the 2022 European Championship. However, he never made a senior appearance for England, leaving the door open to switch his international allegiance under FIFA rules.

The midfielder’s story makes this move particularly significant. He was born in Eisenstadt, Austria, to Nigerian parents before moving to England, where he obtained British citizenship. In the process he gave up his Austrian passport, but he is now able to restore it because that decision was taken for him while he was still a minor.

Chukwuemeka is not the first rising talent to pick Austria recently, with PSV midfielder Paul Wanner also opting to represent the country.

This season, Chukwuemeka has produced 3 goals and 2 assists in 30 matches for Dortmund, underlining his growing influence at club level.
