Cape Verde’s veteran striker, Djaniny Tavares, has found his place in Pedro Leitão Brito’s provisional list for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, marking a comeback after three years of absence.
Jorge Djaniny Tavares Semedo, 32, currently plying his trade with Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia, last donned the Cape Verde national team jersey in 2020.
Following his departure from Al-Ahli SFC, he participated in two AFCON 2021 qualifying matches, which were inconclusive due to Cape Verde not securing qualification.
Subsequently, he was not summoned for the national team by then-coach Pedro Leitão Brito.
However, the coach has recently extended an invitation to Tavares, recognizing his potential contribution to the team ahead of the AFCON 2023 tournament scheduled in Ivory Coast from mid-January.
During his three-year hiatus from international duty, Djaniny Tavares showcased his talents with Trabzonspor (2020-2023) before joining Al-Fateh SC in the summer of 2023.
His stint with the Turkish club saw him score 20 goals in 94 matches. Presently, in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Fateh, Tavares has regained his scoring touch, netting four goals in six matches, a feat that played a pivotal role in his return to the national team.
With two previous participations in continental competitions and a wealth of experience, Djaniny Tavares stands as one of the most seasoned players in Pedro Leitão Brito’s squad.
Having played 35 matches for the Blue Sharks, he brings a unique skill set to the team.
While questions linger about his final selection for the January 2023 competition, Tavares is positioned as one of Cape Verde’s top strikers, second only to Ryan Mendes, the team’s leading goal-scorer.
His return adds depth and experience to the Cape Verdean side, presenting a valuable asset as they prepare for the impending AFCON 2023 campaign.
