South African attacking midfielder Jaedin Rhodes has completed a move from Cape Town City to Austrian side SV Ried, marking a significant step in his career as he makes the switch to European football.

The talented midfielder leaves Cape Town City FC after a difficult campaign in which the Mother City side missed out on promotion to the PSL via the playoffs, meaning they will remain in the National First Division next season.

Rhodes joins SV Ried as a direct replacement for fellow South African winger Antonio van Wyk, who has moved in the opposite direction to join Mamelodi Sundowns.

The swap deal highlights the growing reputation of South African footballers in Austria, with Ried continuing to strengthen their squad using talent from the South African market.

Speaking on the club’s recruitment strategy, SV Ried managing director Wolfgang Fiala explained why Rhodes was identified as the ideal replacement for Van Wyk.

“After the departure of Antonio van Wyk, we were looking for a player who covers Toni’s strengths and is also a little more determined towards the opponent’s goal,” Fiala said.

“Since we have good experiences with South African players, the market was of course interesting for us.

Fiala also praised Rhodes’ attacking style and work rate, highlighting the qualities that convinced the Austrian side to complete the deal despite interest from other clubs.

“Jaedin is a direct player who is very good at pressing and has a good feeling for the depth. We are very pleased that he chose SV Oberbank Ried, although he had some other offers,” he added.

Rhodes is expected to add pace, creativity and attacking intent to Ried’s frontline as the club aims to push for improved performances in the upcoming season.

For the 22-year-old midfielder, the move represents a fresh opportunity to establish himself in European football and continue his development at a higher competitive level.

His departure is also a setback for Cape Town City, who lose one of their promising young talents as they prepare for another season outside the top flight.

Meanwhile, Van Wyk’s move in the opposite direction to Mamelodi Sundowns signals another major transfer involving South African players, underlining the active exchange of talent between Europe and the Premier Soccer League.

Rhodes now turns his attention to adapting quickly to Austrian football as he looks to make an immediate impact at SV Ried.
