Gabon has officially submitted its application to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), aiming to organize the tournament independently this time. The application request was sent to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). However, Gabon faces competition from other candidates such as Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Ivory Coast, who also aspire to host the continental football event in 2019. The CAF Executive Committee is expected to make a decision on the host country in the first half of 2014. Gabon previously co-hosted AFCON with Equatorial Guinea in 2012.
